Everything about Root Canal Treatment

WHAT IS 'ROOT CANAL'?

Root canal is the term used to describe the natural cavity within the center of the tooth. The pulp or pulp chamber is the soft area within the root canal. The tooth's nerve and blood vessels lies within the root canal.

WHEN ROOT CANAL TREATMENT IS ADVISED?

1.Pain

Discomfort ranging from a dull ache to a sharp pain
Usually triggered by chewing, applying pressure on the tooth or eating something cold or hot.

2.Swelling

source

Swollen gums near the painful tooth can be a sign of an issue that requires a root canal. The swelling may come and go. It may be tender when you touch it, or it may not be painful to the touch.

3.Sensitivity

Prolonged sensitivity (pain) to hot or cold temperatures (after the heat or cold has been removed)

4.Night Pain

source

The main reason why toothaches are more painful at night is our sleeping position. Laying down causes more blood rush to our heads, putting extra pressure on sensitive areas, such as our mouths. We don't feel that throbbing sensation as much during the day because we're mostly standing or sitting.

5.Pain on food lodgement

Often patient complains of pain after the food gets lodged into the cavity.

6.Sometimes there can be no symptoms but a deep cavity

What happens in Root Canal Procedure?

  • extract bacteria and decay from the tooth pulp, root, and nerve
  • disinfect the area with antibiotics
  • fill the empty roots
  • seal the area to prevent new decay

Why the procedure has to be done?

1. To stop the infection

2. To get rid of pain

Root canal treatment doesn’t cause pain — it relieves it. The procedure is relatively painless.

3. It won’t get better on its own

The pain killer and antibiotics may reduce the pain and the infection but it might reoccure but it will not get okay on its own. The pain might subside because the nerves inside the canal may get dead.

4. It could get worse

Left untreated, bacteria from the infected tooth pulp can travel through the roots of the tooth and into the tissue of the gums and jaw. That can cause a painful, pus-filled abscess to form, which will require urgent treatment.

5. To save the tooth

If left untreated the infection can spread and the upper portion of tooth may fracture or get damaged which ultimately results in removal of tooth leaving a large gap in the in between the teeth with inability to chew efficiently.

Root canal treatment is highly successful; the procedure has more than a 95% success rate. Many teeth fixed with root canal therapy can last a lifetime. And it's always worth saving what is natural and otherwise going for tooth removal !
