Why Dental Treatment is so Expensive ?

Is your Dentist minting money by ripping you off?

Do you often complain of high Dental expenses?

When we see the charges for any treatment the Dentist would tell you the lump-sum amount of a particular treatment . For giving that treatment efficiently and adhering to the Best quality becomes necessary, that's where the cost increases.

Let us consider and divide background expenses  for that one ceramic crown or the denture you opted for:

1.Experience and expertise  (40%)

Have you visited an ortho specialist before ? of course they charge you more than what a medical professional without any speciality would charge .

Dentistry itself is a speciality which only deals with your teeth and other oral issues.
The dental professionals having minimal experience will not charge you more than the experienced ones. It's always 'value for money' when it comes to dentistry.

Dentistry cannot be mass produced. Every procedure in dentistry is highly customised to a particular patient (person). When there is only so many hours that the dentist/hygienist can see patients in a day, the fees charged to patients will necessarily have to reflect the constraints of output for each practitioner.

2.Infrastructure charges (Set up cost 30%)

A dentist has to find at least three rooms (surgery, waiting room and sterilizing room) and they must be properly plumbed and compliant. The surgery and sterilizing room, are in effect, a mini hospital.

At the very least a compressor, suction motor, sterilizing autoclave machines, motorized electronic treatment couch, surgical light, drill hand-piece delivery unit, X-rays unit, laser unit … are all  basic equipment.

Many dental practitioners in various specialties also need to invest additionally in surgical microscopes, larger panoral x-ray machines, specialised implant surgery units etc.

There are a multitude of instruments and materials needed on a daily basis and special in-surgery storage facilities need to be installed.

3.Materials used (running cost 30%)

Dentistry is a very highly regulated industry. Governments around the world have the responsibility to make sure that it is safe for their citizens to visit their dentists.

To achieve this end, every dental practice needs to have infection control standards like a mini-hospital. This not only costs a lot in materials (disposable items), but also a lot of manpower and work hours (items for repeated use).

Dentistry is a small industry, so companies that manufacture dental equipment and materials need to charge each dentist a lot in order for the companies to recuperate the cost of research and development.

Next time when you visit the Dentist before you complain about the charges, you can think about all the 'small things; that have been done right from those new gloves to usage of new instruments along with the high quality, expert care that dentist is delivering to you!
An investment in your health is always a good investment. Always make sure that you are in good hands and proper care is provided!
